Best Buy already has its back-to-school displays up, Amazon's "back to school" storefront is live, and the discounts on last year's models are real — but so is the pressure to spend $1,500 on a machine that will spend four years running a browser and a word processor. A first-year student doesn't need the same setup as a senior finishing a thesis, and a high schooler doesn't need either one. Yet the marketing rarely makes that distinction, because a single "everyone needs this" pitch is easier to sell than four different, more honest ones. The gap between what students are told they need and what they'll actually open more than twice a week is wider than most parents realize, and closing that gap is mostly a matter of buying boring things instead of exciting ones.

The Laptop Question: Chromebook, MacBook, or Windows?

For most high schoolers, a Chromebook is still the right call, and not because it's the cheap option — because it's the durable one. Lenovo's IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook runs about $299 at Best Buy, survives a backpack drop that would crack a MacBook's lid, and boots in under ten seconds. Battery life on the current generation regularly clears twelve hours, which matters more than raw processing power when the device needs to make it through a full school day plus a bus ride without a charger in sight.

College is a different calculation, and this is where the MacBook Air earns its reputation. The M4 model starts at $999 and has become the default recommendation for design, film, and computer science majors specifically because of its battery life — real-world use puts it past 15 hours, not the marketing number, the actual number after a semester of Chrome tabs and Spotify running in the background. It also runs cool and silent, which matters more than it sounds like it should when you're the one working next to it in a shared dorm room at midnight. Engineering and CS students who need to run Windows-specific software, though, should skip the Mac entirely and look at a Dell XPS 13 or an ASUS Zenbook 14, both of which now ship with enough RAM (16GB minimum, don't go lower) to handle a virtual machine without grinding to a halt. Buy the 16GB configuration even if it costs an extra $100 — 8GB machines are already struggling with modern browser tabs, and a laptop bought this July needs to still be usable in 2030. Resist the upsell to 32GB unless the coursework specifically calls for it; that jump adds another $200-$300 for headroom most undergraduates will never touch.

Tablets: Worth It for Note-Taking, or Just Another Screen?

The iPad has genuinely earned its place in a college backpack, but only for a specific kind of student. If your workflow involves marking up PDFs, sketching diagrams in organic chemistry, or annotating a professor's slides in real time, the iPad Air with an Apple Pencil Pro (roughly $599 for the pair) replaces a stack of notebooks and does it without the lag that made earlier stylus tablets frustrating. What a tablet does not replace is a laptop for writing papers. Anyone who tells you a $350 tablet with a $150 keyboard case is a laptop substitute for a full course load hasn't tried typing a ten-page essay on a detachable keyboard at 1 a.m. It's a supplement to serious writing work, not a stand-in for it — and a tablet purchase made on that false premise is money spent twice, once on the tablet and again on the laptop the student ends up buying by October anyway.

Earbuds and Headphones for the Dorm and the Classroom

Noise-canceling matters more for students than for almost anyone else buying headphones this year, because dorms are loud in ways that home offices aren't. Sony's WH-1000XM5 over-ears, at $349, remain the benchmark for blocking out a roommate's video calls, but they're bulky for a backpack that already holds a laptop and three textbooks. For day-to-day wear between classes, AirPods Pro 2 at $249 or Sony's WF-1000XM5 earbuds at $299 both deliver real noise cancellation in a case small enough to disappear into a pocket.

Budget-conscious buyers shouldn't feel like they're settling for less by skipping the premium names. Anker's Soundcore Space A40, at $79, uses the same fundamental noise-canceling approach as models three times the price, and blind listening tests consistently rank it above earbuds costing twice as much. The battery lasts a full day of back-to-back lectures on a single charge, which is the number that actually matters when the closest outlet is two buildings away.

The Chargers and Cables Nobody Budgets For

Put that money into a $30 hard-shell laptop sleeve instead — physical damage from drops is the actual risk, and a sleeve prevents it for a fraction of the price.

Also skip the gaming laptop unless gaming is genuinely the primary use case. Every August, someone convinces a parent that a $1,800 RTX-equipped gaming laptop is necessary for "video editing" or "just in case," and it spends the semester as a $1,800 word processor with a fan that's audible across a library reading room. If gaming actually matters, a $1,200 machine handles it fine; if it doesn't, that money is better spent on the laptop-plus-accessories combination above with $600 left over.

Skip smart rings and AI wearables entirely this cycle. The Oura Ring and the current crop of AI pendants are interesting products, but they solve problems most students don't have yet, and the app ecosystems around them are still thin enough that the $300-$400 price tag buys more novelty than function. A student's actual daily friction points — dead phone battery, cracked laptop screen, earbuds that die mid-lecture — are solved by the boring accessories above, not the exciting ones on a tech blog's front page.

A Realistic Budget by Grade Level

High schoolers need less than the internet suggests. A $299 Chromebook, a $79 pair of noise-canceling earbuds, and a $39 charger covers real needs for around $420, leaving room for a $30 sleeve and still landing well under $500 total. That's not a compromise — for a student who isn't running specialized software, it's the correct amount of computer.

College students doing serious coursework should plan around $1,200-$1,500: a $999 MacBook Air or comparable Windows ultrabook, a $249 pair of AirPods Pro or equivalent, and $150-$200 in chargers, cables, and a sleeve. Design, film, and engineering majors pushing heavier workloads — video rendering, CAD, large datasets — are the exception where spending up to $2,000 on a higher-RAM, discrete-graphics configuration is worth it, but that's a minority of students, not the default assumption every back-to-school ad wants you to make.
