Your flight lands, you switch off airplane mode, and nothing happens. No bars, no data, no way to call the rideshare you booked from the terminal. Every frequent traveler has lived this moment at least once, and for years the fix was the same ritual: hunt down an airport kiosk, hand over cash for a plastic SIM card the size of a fingernail, and hope the phone recognizes it before your ride cancels. eSIM technology was supposed to kill that ritual. Three years after Apple made it mandatory on US iPhones, it mostly has — but "mostly" is doing real work in that sentence, and the gap between the marketing and the setup screen still trips people up every back-to-school and fall travel season.

You still get a phone number, a data plan, and a carrier relationship — the difference is entirely in how that relationship gets installed. Google Fi takes a different approach entirely — its Flexible plan charges $20 a month for unlimited talk and text plus $10 per GB of data, and that same plan works at the same rate in over 200 countries without any separate international pack, which is about as close to "it just works" pricing as the category currently gets. It's the better pick for someone who travels unpredictably and doesn't want to shop for a new eSIM every time a trip gets added to the calendar.
If you'd rather stay on your existing US carrier instead of juggling a second eSIM profile, the big three have their own international add-ons: Verizon's TravelPass runs about $12 a day for unlimited talk, text, and data in 185-plus countries, AT&T's International Day Pass is priced almost identically, and T-Mobile includes free (if slow) 2G data roaming in over 210 countries on most postpaid plans, with a paid upgrade to full-speed data available per trip. For a two-week trip, the day-pass carriers add up fast — do the math before you leave, because $12 a day for fourteen days comes to $168, more than double what a 20GB Airalo pass costs for the same window.
Setting One Up Without Losing Your Mind
The process itself is short, but the order you do things in matters more than the instructions usually let on:
- Buy the eSIM online or through the provider's app before you leave home, while you still have reliable Wi-Fi
- Install the profile immediately after purchase — most QR codes and activation links expire or can only be scanned once, so don't save it "for later"
- Label the new line clearly in your phone's settings (both iPhone and Android let you name each SIM profile individually)
- Set your home carrier's line as the default for calls and texts, and the new eSIM as the default for data, so you're not paying roaming rates just to send a text message
- Some providers also require you to manually enable data roaming on the eSIM profile itself, a separate toggle from the phone's general roaming switch, and this is where most first-time setups quietly fail
Do this the night before your flight, not at the gate. Airport Wi-Fi is unreliable at exactly the moment you'll need it most, and a half-installed eSIM profile with no working data is worse than the plastic-card kiosk it was supposed to replace.

If you travel internationally more than once a year, yes — the setup time pays for itself the first trip you don't spend hunting for a SIM card kiosk with a dying phone battery. If your travel stays entirely domestic, an eSIM buys you almost nothing over your existing plan, and there's no real reason to add a second profile you'll never use. The technology solved a genuine problem for a specific kind of user; it didn't become mandatory for everyone just because Apple removed the tray.
