Gartner is projecting a combined 130% surge in DRAM and SSD prices by the end of 2026, which the firm estimates will push average PC prices up roughly 17% once manufacturers pass the cost through. That's not a distant forecast. Market research firm SigmaIntel already clocked LPDDR5X — the low-power memory soldered into thin laptops like the Dell XPS 13 — up 89% quarter-over-quarter in Q2 alone. Chipmakers are blaming a mix of AI datacenter demand eating into wafer capacity and a slower-than-expected ramp on new fabrication lines, and neither of those is fixing itself by Christmas.
What that means for the laptop you're about to buy
Here's the part that actually changes your shopping decision: current retail inventory was priced against last year's memory costs. Second-half 2026 stock will not be. The conventional advice — wait for the deepest back-to-school discounts in late July and August — happens to line up with the last batch of laptops built before the price hikes hit component costs, which means this year the usual "wait for the sale" logic and the "buy before it gets worse" logic point at the exact same laptops, at the exact same time, for once.
Dell, HP and Lenovo have all launched sales this week spanning nine standout models from $299 to $1,639.99, according to TechRadar's retail desk. The one worth actually looking at is the Dell 14, marked down to $699.99 from $1,229.99 — a $530 cut on a machine running an Intel Core 7 150U, 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD, which is a genuinely usable spec sheet for a student or a home office, not a stripped-down loss leader with 8GB you'll regret in a year. Dell is also knocking 50% off its 27-inch SE2726H monitor when you buy it alongside a PC, an offer that runs through August 31 at 11:59 PM Central, and it's tacking on $29-a-year Accidental Damage protection covering drops, spills and power surges — worth adding if the laptop's going anywhere near a dorm room or a kid's backpack.
16GB is the number to hold the line on
Buy 16GB of RAM this month if you can. Don't buy an 8GB laptop expecting to upgrade it later — on the vast majority of thin-and-light 2026 laptops, the RAM is soldered directly to the motherboard, not socketed, so "I'll add more RAM next year" isn't actually an option the way it was on laptops from a decade ago. What to skip
Skip anything advertised primarily on screen size or color options rather than the processor and RAM configuration — that's usually a sign the listing is trying to distract from a spec sheet that wouldn't survive scrutiny otherwise. And skip extended warranties beyond the manufacturer's standard coverage plus something like Dell's $29 accidental damage add-on; a third-party extended warranty on a $700 laptop rarely pays for itself, and by the time it might, you'll likely want a new machine anyway given how component pricing is trending.

Checking the spec sheet before you check out
Retailers know most shoppers scan a listing for price and screen size, so the fine print is where the corner-cutting hides. Pull up the actual product page — not the ad, not the search snippet — and confirm three things before adding anything to a cart this month.
- RAM configuration and whether it's soldered or upgradeable. Most 2026 thin-and-lights are soldered, so treat whatever number is listed as permanent.
- Storage type: NVMe SSD, not eMMC. A handful of sub-$400 laptops still ship with eMMC storage, which is noticeably slower and shows up more in budget listings once shoppers are chasing a low headline price.

One more thing worth checking: return windows.
